Bard Mobile is out for iOS now!

Category: book Nook

Ok all you animals residing in the U.S., join me in downloading the Bard Mobile app. You can have it on up to 5 devices but it's not cross-device compatible in terms of book positions and the like.
You do have to download things from your wish list, but they have a mini browser to get to Bard from within the app so you can go right there aand add things. Anyway there's more and the user guide is pretty good, it's in your bookshelf under the Help category.
Me, I am pleased as they are doing Braille format nicely, and also I never did use the giant player very much. Couldn't be bothered to lug it around the house with a headphone attached, so as not to disturb other people. So now the iPod will have another use than just my workouts.

Just grabbed it, so far looks nice and promising!

super excited, OMG. I was looking for it just the other day. I really need to get it. I am also planning to get a new phone in the next day or so. I was going to do it today but ran in to a few more ideas to think about... suuuuupppppeeerrrr excited.

Between this and getting my 5S, this day just can't get any better. Well, ok, I could win the lottery or something but for now, I'm in geek heaven!

Yay awesome.

Post 6 by BigDogDaddy (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 7:10:10

I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong here, but it appears the screen can't be locked and the app doesn't play in the background, meaning you can't have the app running and say check your email. If this is correct it's a deal breaker for me.

Post 7 by BigDogDaddy (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 12:10:22

A follow up to my previous post.
Under settings, audio playback, in the new bard app, you can enable background playing. This allows you to close the app, or lock the screen. IMHO should be the default behavior!

if you don't have books on your wishlist, as I don't, does that mean you can't download anything?
considering I currently use web-braille, will I have to switch to the bard version of books, since I don't have a braille display?
I'm just trying to find these things out, before I get into something that's still in its baby stages and needing more work.

Post 9 by write away (The Zone's Blunt Object) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 13:50:32

Chelsea, if you want to read braille books on bard, you cant' do it via the IOS app because braille books would only work when using a braille display. and you're right, web braille isn't the same thing as bard and is therefore inaccessible in IOS.
This is for listening digital talking books only.
On another note, yeaaaaaaaaa, I'm so excited that this is finally in the app store. :)

Earlier, someone sent an email from the BARD technical support team that indicated that you can read braille books and magazines with this app, if you have a braille display. I haven't gotten the app yet, but the email said that there's a section in the user guide dedicated to reading braille in the app.

Post 11 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 14:11:59

yeah, it makes sense that you should be able to use braille, if you have a braille display. that's how I thought it'd be, when they first started talking about the app being made.

Post 12 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 14:59:39

I've been wishing for ages now that I had a Braille display that would work with my phone. I do like the BARD app, and audio books are good, but I love reading in Braille best. Now I *really* want one!

Post 13 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 15:25:11

I, too, prefer using braille over audio.

Post 14 by LittleSneezer (The Zone-BBS is my prison, but I like it here.) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 16:05:36

I won't listen to aaudio books unless I absolutely have to.

Post 15 by write away (The Zone's Blunt Object) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 16:32:31

I tried using the app in conjunction with my refreshabraille from APH and it works seamlessly. I feel so lucky I have this little gadget on hand.

Post 16 by Nicky (And I aprove this message.) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 16:35:11

I am thinking to get the 5S too. I would have gottenit yesterday morning ut I am putting other things first and will wait until I pay mysef in a week or so before getting it. LOL.
But with that said....
I am still needing to get that app. I am excited. So does it take up a lot of space with downloading books or listening to them on your phone?
And again, can someone explain if there is a way to put books in your wish list threw the phone itself without have to go online??? thnks .

Post 17 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 17:24:50

Once you're in the "get books" tab, you can click where it says "brows BARD." That will take you to the website where you can either download the books or add them to your wishlist.
Man, I really wish I had a braille display as well but considering that I've spent $2000 on technology over the past 2 months, that's probably not going to happen any time soon. lol

Post 18 by Nicky (And I aprove this message.) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 19:35:52

You do not have to go online to the website and put stuff in your wish list to download and listen to it on your phone. i just downloaded the app and then went to get a book. I downloaded it threw the app and am able to listen to it.
I did it by

on the bottom of the screan says book shelf...get books...settings...now reading...
I went to get books.
Then I went to audio books under the heading recently added books.
I found a book in the list then whent to the bottom under it that said more infoe.
I then clicked on the download buttom. and it downloaded and i was able to listen to it.
I did not need to go on to their website and add anything to the wish list.

Come on domestic, just a little more money is all? Smile.

Post 20 by snowflower (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 20:41:48

Does this ap have a search field? I can't find it...

Post 21 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 21:45:04

Lol, Wayne. First we need new living room furniture and a new keyboard. lol

So if I add something to the wishlist on the site can I access that from the app? I prefer navigating via the web and listening using the app.
To the last poster, if you do the brows Bard link, it's just like the website and has a search field.

Ok, thanks Domestic Goddess!!!

Post 23 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Monday, 23-Sep-2013 11:04:30

Yes you can do it from the website, and add things to the wish list, then access them from the app.
I agree about Braille and it's nice the app supports it. However, there are books I've been meaning to read, which simply aren't in Braille. So now I'm finally reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
I used to have the Braille dogmatic position, but the way I look at things anymore, having access to the content is better than not having access to it. So, if the book's available in both formats, I'll read it in Braille. Otherwise, I'll read it instead of going without simply for the sake of the Braille goddess or whatever name one ascribes that holy grale religion to.
It helps that a lot of sighted people are now using audio books as well.
I'd rather have access to the content than not have it.

Post 24 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Monday, 23-Sep-2013 11:20:29

if you can't retain what you're listening to, though, there's really no point. that's all I'm saying.

Post 25 by Nicky (And I aprove this message.) on Monday, 23-Sep-2013 18:47:33

You do not have to go online and put books on your wish list to download them on the app, you can do it dirrectly from the app itself.

Post 26 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Tuesday, 24-Sep-2013 8:51:58

I don't know why but I can brows and navigate more quickly using my computer than I can my phone. Go figure.

Post 27 by Flidais (WISEST IS SHE WHO KNOWS THAT SHE DOES NOT KNOW) on Tuesday, 24-Sep-2013 10:39:40

Is there a way to make the summarys under the recently added books auto show up like on the website instead of having to click on more info each time?
I'd look in the user guide, but this kitten is IChallenged.

Post 28 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Tuesday, 24-Sep-2013 19:25:18

Post 24:
You can retain it on the device itself, but no, you can't across multiple devices. The books are downloaded, not on a data cloud of sorts. Though I do believe that they plan to incorporate the use of iCloud bookmarks in future, or something like iCloud.
Post 27:
The only way to make summaries show up is if you use the browsing bard option and ues their mini browser thing to do it. Otherwise, no, there's no other way.

I do like this ap a lot, myself. Even with iOS 7, I've only noticed a few minor issues with it, but none that make it so that you can't use the ap at all.

I DOWNLOADED A BOOK, BUT CAN'T FIND IT TO START PLAYING IT. AND SEE NO EASY WAY TO SEARCH FOR SOMETHING THAT ISN'T ON THE RECENTLY ADDED LIST.

I WENT TO THE MAIN PAGE, SEARCHED FROM THERE, BUT THEN DID NOT SEE A WAY TO DL THE BOOK. THE ONLY OPTION SEEMED TO BE TO ADD IT TO THE WISH LIST.

Post 30 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Wednesday, 25-Sep-2013 2:12:32

Unless you find the audio books under the recently added section, you have to add it to your wish list and then download it from there, (if you browse the by author or title, for example) For each book you find, there will be an add to wish list option. after you're done browsing, you can go to your wish list and download them.

Post 31 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Wednesday, 25-Sep-2013 8:22:29

You should be able to click the "Bookshelf tab located at the bottom left of your screen. That'll open the place where your books are and you can just double tap the book title.
Now that I've finished one, I've got to figure out how to delete it. I'll bet there's a remove button under "more info."

Post 32 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 25-Sep-2013 11:27:37

Deleting it is actually more simple than that. You are able to just flick up or down, and find a delete option. If not, then set the roder to actions, and then try flicking up or down from the title of the book, again.

Post 33 by Nicky (And I aprove this message.) on Wednesday, 25-Sep-2013 16:33:35

when you go to the book flick right once and it will say more infoe and you go there and it says download at the bottom. I have done it.

Post 34 by BigDogDaddy (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Thursday, 26-Sep-2013 7:52:27

Also, if you just double tap the name of the book under the recently added heading, it'll ask if you wish to download this title?

Post 35 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 08-Mar-2014 18:46:48

I have the bard app on my phone, and it comes in handy for the long ride to school, or when i just want to lay in bed and listen to a book. I was never a big fan of that big player that took up most of my desk.

Not sure if this would help, but I did a rather lengthy podcast on it Here

Post 37 by Nicky (And I aprove this message.) on Monday, 10-Mar-2014 0:21:44

I like that it doesn't take up a lot of space on your phone and it also doesn't use up a lot of battory either.

Post 38 by KC8PNL (The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.) on Tuesday, 11-Mar-2014 18:28:14

It will take up a lot of space if you download a lot of books and don't delete them. LOL.

Post 39 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 11-Mar-2014 18:50:04

I delete mine as soon as I'm done reading it.
